Re: Options for edge insulation

Sorry Pete, no time to contribute other than to say "Hi" and "I'm happy if you found my stuff helpful". Your posts are very interesting. Oh and yes, I'm a bit like a virus - I spread everywhere LOL If you want to go absolute minimum, may I suggest you look into seasonal thermal s...

Re: Optimum slab insulation thickness

Albrecht,
Thanks for posting the link to http://www.eehnz.com/DSHH_works.htm (this page explains how it works)
Very interesting.

Notice their warning on "if you have water flowing" when you excavate. That would increase the need for under-slab insulation even more.

Re: Optimum slab insulation thickness

Philip, Sorry I don't have much time. Have you looked at my table of results? http://www.neuralnetwriter.cylo42.com/node/1811 I know there is a lot in that table, but if you study it carefully you should be able to see the effect of adding insulation at each point. I know heating the slab will chang...

Re: Options for edge insulation

Hi nellyt, If you want to understand the details of differential settlement, this is very good: http://environment.uwe.ac.uk/geocal/foundations/foundations.htm As I understand it the norm is a good concrete and steel connection between slab and foundations. I can only assume  that because the...

Re: Options for edge insulation

Albrecht, I've spent weeks modelling, but had to stop due to work  But, I've very quickly written up my results so far. It's far from as well written as I would like, but maybe of interest to those reading this, and yourself. The starting point is here: Test Series 2: Introduction to Modelling...

Re: Options for edge insulation

nellyt, Apologies for not getting back sooner. Before I continue I want to say one thing. Albrecht is the expert. I am probably best described as an enthusiastic amateur with a scientific background. I'm also in the Christchurch area. I had a discussion with a local compliance guy recently. He was n...

Re: Options for edge insulation

I've done a huge number of simulations on foundations. Unfortunately I've not had time to complete them and publish the results. But one thing I've learnt is that the soil type and moisture is VERY important. I suspect that most people put the soil almost as an after thought, if they consider it at ...

Re: external wall thickness for slab R-value

Hi Albrecht, Yes, I noticed BRANZ listed in one of their documents. There is a HEAT2D and a HEAT3D (2-D and 3-D modelling). If you want extra nodes (the extended versions), you pay a little extra over the normal price. I'm using the FREE versions, so on 2D I'm limited to 25x25 nodes, hence my rather...

Re: external wall thickness for slab R-value

Hi Albrecht, I've been playing with: THERM http://windows.lbl.gov/software/therm/therm.html (FREE - it looks like it is only for windows, but is not) and HEAT2 http://www.buildingphysics.com/index-filer/heat2.htm (Not free - but there is a non-time limited reduced number of nodes version which is WE...
