Internal opening from stairs into storage area

Postby noki96 » Mon Dec 11, 2017 9:04 am

Hi,
I am wondering if it is possible to include in the calculations a stairs opening from a storage area into a mezz. floor area that will be lined and insulated?
How would I do this? the opening is 1.2w x 2.6 high
Thanks in advance

That's a tricky one, Nokie69

The NZS4218:2009 does not really account for such openings. If there is no door then the R-value would be very small, i.e. in the order of R-0.05 to R-0.1, but because the heatflow is really cause by the airflow, rather than heat conductance through insulation material, it will be strongly influenced by the geometric layout of the opening and where exactly in the building layout it is. In particular if it connects spaces on different levels of the building the stack effect will be significant (warm air rising), and the actual R-value may be a lot lower than R-0.05.

You could model that as a custom window type with R-0.05.

But you mentioned that this is an internal opening. As you know you can ignore all internal building elements for H1 calculations. You only need to include the external thermal envelope.

I hope this helps.

Sunny regards
